Crocoite is a rare mineral, found, at first, in the Middle Urals, at the Berezovskiy mine it was named red lead ore, or Siberian red lead. In 1766, it was described by Russ. mineralogist I.G. Lehman 1700-1767, and in 1797 the Fr. chemist L.N. Vauquelin 1763-1829 discovered a new element chromium in it.

Oct 21, 2018 The beautiful red color, transparency and crystalline form of the Siberian red mineral made mineralogists interested in its nature and the place where it was found a large proportion and the accompanying lead ore, naturally, made it necessary to assume the presence of lead in this mineral. In 1797, Vauclin repeated the analysis.

In the mid 18th century analysis of Siberian red lead PbCrO4, crocoite from Siberia showed that it contained quite a lot of lead, but also a further material. This was eventually identified as chromium oxide. Chromium oxide was discovered in 1797 by Louis-Nicholas Vauquelin, who prepared the metal itself in the following year.

May 14, 2018 Studies of Siberian red lead were difficult, however. It was mined at only one location in Germany and miners found it difficult to remove. Scientists had only small amounts of the mineral to study. They guessed that it contained lead as well as arsenic, molybdenum, or some other metal. In 1797, Vauquelin began his own studies of Siberian red lead.

Aug 23, 2017 Vauquelin discovered this chemical element in Paris in a Siberian red lead ore, which is now known as crocoite. He extracted the lead carbonate of chromic acid by boiling the mineral with potassium carbonate or K 2 CO 3. Following this experiment, he declared that he had found a new element and attempted to isolate the metal properly.
